Of course, you learn - with experience - what to expect to some degree, particularly if you learn how to read the "Dradis" blips and the actions of various ships, but it's easy to misread and that could be bad news for you. As a matter of fact, one of the most important things you will have to do is to recon the enemy to identify what you will be fighting.and you had better do it quick. However, in the main campaigns, you almost never know exactly what kind of Cylon fleet you will be facing.
You can create your own Colonial and Cylon fleets to battle, but - then again - you know what fleets are going to show up because you hand-picked them.
The only unknown is what battlefield you will be fighting in. In BSG Deadlock's Skirmish mode, you can select pre-assembled Colonial and Cylon fleets and battle in one of 26 randomly-selected battlefields, but you know what kind of Cylon Fleet will show up because you picked it.
